The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem issued a safety alert on October 13 after an explosion during a school trip in northern Israel killed a teenager and injured 24 people the previous day.

In its October 14 report, The Jerusalem Post identified the teenager as Elazar Yair Wilensky and reported that unexploded Hezbollah ammunition caused the explosion.

The embassy warned that unexploded ordnance can be found across areas of Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Such objects may be rusted, partly buried, or difficult to recognize, and their locations are not always marked. Rain, flooding, agricultural work, and construction can bring buried ammunition to the surface and make it unstable.

Hazardous objects include artillery shells, rockets, grenades, landmines, and small cluster submunitions that may resemble toys or balls.

According to The Jerusalem Post’s account of the alert, anyone encountering a suspicious object should stop, carefully retrace their route, keep others away, and notify Israel Police by calling 100. People should avoid touching suspicious objects or using phones and radios nearby.

The embassy also advised remaining on paved roads and familiar trails outside urban areas. Parents were urged to teach children never to touch unfamiliar metal objects and to report discoveries to an adult.
